Question: How Can I Maintain Company Culture During Rapid Growth?
My business is growing and the pace of new hires, clients, and projects is accelerating. How I can I encourage this growth while keeping my startup culture from dissipating?
Meet our Executive: Susan Evans, Founder, Evans Larson Communications
Answer: Share Ideas and Monitor Changes
We have a carefully crafted work environment to ensure our creative teams and leadership are consistently working at full capacity, yet not overwhelmed. We constantly monitor culture to ensure that teams feel empowered to challenge the status quo, confident in their expertise, and comfortable at work, even as we add more tasks to their workload.
To manage growth and culture, we worked with our advisory board — we’ve had one for 26 years, and they are invaluable — to reaffirm the guidelines on what we offer, allow, and provide as a firm. Next we took those guidelines to our teams to discuss their priorities and concerns; for instance, what they would like to see in new clients and new team members, and how changes might impact life at work.
From there, we outlined some possible scenarios and planned staff check-ins every other month, and private meetings as needed, to ensure that our growth would not negatively impact the culture and environment that makes our team work.
