Meet Forbes Real Estate Council member Ray Pressley, COO and co-founder of Brevitas. Brevitas is a nationwide commercial real estate marketplace focused on investment sales and leasing. It provides marketing software for brokers and agents, including outbound email marketing, landing pages, and secure deal rooms. As co-founder, Pressley has been involved from the beginning, building the company’s platform from nothing to over 70,000 members.
Pressley’s experience combines digital marketing for a range of industries with several years as an investment sales agent. While working in real estate, he noticed that commercial brokers were in need of better marketing tools, so he set out to build a platform that would provide that service.
Brevitas is working to leverage technology to innovate marketing in the commercial real estate space. As COO, Pressley develops creative strategies that pull the best marketing practices from outside industries and apply them to commercial real estate — and finds ways to prove to clients that these new ideas deliver results.
Pressley says he measures personal success in trust: “Whether a colleague, peer, or client, I consider others’ faith in my abilities as an accomplishment.”
Below, Pressley took a moment to share his thoughts on challenges, growing a business, and innovation.
[The best part of my work is] solving problems and helping people. I love figuring out the puzzle, and determining all of the different pathways to a solution. I think as an entrepreneur, you have to enjoy the daily challenges that are thrown your way.
I’ve learned that there is always a way forward, and that determining the most strategic way to maneuver through challenges is what I enjoy the most, and where my past experience really supports the inertia of what we’re building at Brevitas.
On Growing a Business
Product development and sales pipeline are everything. Listen fervently to your early customers, and inform your product roadmap based on real-time feedback, not your assumptions of use-cases or market predictions.
Your business vehicle is more important than your current paycheck. Working on something that can scale and grow is worth the risk and short term monetary sacrifice.
We’re building a company that is providing value to an entire industry — and helping to move CRE into the 21st century. I’m exceptionally proud that the tools we’ve created are being utilized by so many CRE professionals in not just the US, but throughout the world. For our company, I gauge success based on the feedback and referrals we receive from our client base. It’s hugely gratifying when one of our clients attributes Brevitas to the growth of their business.
[I am inspired by] the underdog story and changing the world with a simple idea. It might sound cliche, but I love the process of building something great from the bottom. I would love to get involved with a redevelopment or repurposing project, turning around an old building or something like that. I love the creative process in turning something old and forgotten into something that’s fresh and truly wows people.
I have to go with my dog Oliver. He’s the best.
All of them…. I have a bit of a sweets problem. Especially donuts and Oreos.
App you can’t do without?
Nextdoor — I like the garage sale hustle.
AllTrails — Countless places to explore on that app.
A short amount of exercise right when I wake up. I either take my dog for a quick run or get on the indoor bike for 20 minutes. I’ve found that it clears my head, puts me in a positive mood, and gets me ready to handle any situation.
